A manifesto for
LGBT+ Educators
My journey to activism and trade unionism began with my transition, in my current workplace, five years ago. During this time the landscape for LGBT+ educators has not become more welcoming and embracing. Instead we have seen increasing hostility, prejudice, legislation and attacks.
I’m asking you for support to undertake a final term to represent you on the executive.
As LGBT+ Executive member, I want to help us win LGBT+ inclusion in every school and college.
Achievements
5000+ more LGBT+ members, now at 14,000 LGBT+ members
Double the number of workplace reps who are LGBT+
Over a third more District LGBT+ officers
Huge increases in LGBT+ Women’s attendance at LGBT+ conference
Non-binary as a visible characteristic in our membership data
Steering our new LGBT+ charter through to publication this April.
What’s next?
I’d like 2 final years as your Executive member to:…
Continue to build transformative engagement of LGBT+ members in branches, districts, conferences and elected roles including workplace reps
Unite LGBT+ members in a shared vision of equality that takes an intersectional approach - boosting and platforming the voices of marginalised and under-represented groups.
Continued collaboration with all those who face oppression to shape the direction and integrity of our work - placing our NEU at the vanguard of good practice.
Continue using the power and influence of the elected role to help and support LGBT+ members facing discrimination.
Fully support the leadership and members of the union in publicly fighting and challenging the growing threat of far and alt-right narratives in government, the media, workplaces and schools.
To ensure LGBT+ voices are a vital and necessary component of a wider socialist movement bringing social justice and transformative change.
